Some browser storage supports the service you use. Optional Story analytics helps the organisation behind a Story understand how people experience it. You decide whether to contribute.

You can change or withdraw your analytics choice below. Declining optional analytics does not prevent you from watching a Story.

1. Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small pieces of information stored by your browser. Local storage and session storage can also remember information on your device. Some information exists only in the page's memory. The rules on access to your device are not limited to traditional cookies.

Butterfly uses browser storage to support functions such as sign-in, session recovery and preferences. Our optional Story analytics also uses a short-lived identifier in memory. Its separate consent cookie remembers your choice, rather than identifying your playthrough.

2. Storage for the service you use

Sign-in information keeps authenticated access working. A Learning Session recovery token helps you return as the same participant. Other preferences remember settings you choose. These functions are separate from the optional Story analytics setting.

The consent preference itself remembers acceptance or refusal for 24 hours. It contains the choice, the policy version and issue and expiry times. It contains no individual Story answers or playthrough identifier. Cookies for organisation Stories are scoped to that organisation; personal projects have separate preferences.

Browser storage can be removed through your browser settings. Removing sign-in or session recovery information may sign you out or prevent recovery of your participation. Removing a cookie does not by itself delete records held on the server.

3. Optional Story analytics

If you accept, Butterfly records Story starts, completion, scenes reached, first choices at dilemmas, manual response times and visible-page activity. An approximate country is added where available. These measurements help the organisation understand how its Story is experienced.

We do not write the playthrough identifier or analytics event queue to a cookie, local storage or session storage. They remain in page memory while events are sent to our server. Temporary server records are scheduled for deletion within 24 hours; aggregate statistics remain with the project.

Optional collection starts only after an affirmative choice. It remains off if you decline or do not answer. Your Story continues either way. The Privacy policy explains the data fields, retention and access in more detail.

4. Changing or withdrawing your choice

Use Edit cookie settings on this page or the Privacy policy to change your choice. The Privacy & cookies link in a published Story opens the settings for that Story's organisation or personal project. When no particular Story is selected, the controls apply to the existing Story analytics preferences saved in this browser on this website. New organisations ask separately.

Choosing Reject analytics stops further optional collection in open Stories covered by the choice and remembers your refusal. You can continue the Story. Withdrawal is not a request to leave a Learning Session or erase account progress, and it does not automatically remove aggregate counts already contributed.

Choices are specific to this browser and website. Another browser or domain has separate preferences. If browser storage is blocked, we cannot reliably remember a choice for a later visit; the Story can still be experienced without optional analytics.

5. Video delivery and Mux

Mux delivers videos used in our Stories. Loading a video sends connection information to that provider so that it can serve the video. This delivery is separate from optional playback analytics.

In published Stories outside a Learning Session, accepting optional analytics enables both Butterfly Story analytics and Mux playback analytics. Mux uses browser cookies with randomly generated viewer and session identifiers to relate video views, together with network, browser, device and video information, to measure playback and video quality.

For those public Stories, Mux playback analytics and its use of cookies are disabled before you accept and after you decline or withdraw. Video delivery remains available. Mux playback analytics is disabled in editor previews.

Learning Sessions use Mux playback measurement with Mux cookies disabled. This provides video-quality and playback diagnostics independently of public Story analytics preferences. We do not send participant names, participant tokens, learning responses or Session Link paths as Mux metadata. Cookie-free measurement still processes connection, device and playback information. The organisation must explain the applicable purpose and legal basis alongside its Learning Session privacy information.

Withdrawing public Story analytics consent stops further playback measurement in the public Stories covered by that choice. It does not automatically delete information already sent to Mux. Mux explains its data fields, provider retention and erasure process in its privacy documentation, linked below. You can contact our privacy address about a request concerning that information.
