Where Butterfly currently uses AI

AI features are optional and purpose-specific. The available feature and service provider can vary by client agreement or project setup.

Interactive AI chat

Google Gemini

Generates a reply from a story character after the scripted conversation, when a creator has enabled the feature.

Information processed: The viewer’s message, relevant conversation history, and the creator’s instructions for the character.

Automated transcription

ElevenLabs

Creates editable subtitle cues from audio in uploaded media.

Information processed: The audio track and, where selected, its language.

Automated translation

DeepL

Translates selected project text and subtitle content into another language.

Information processed: The text selected for translation and the requested target language.

AI-generated images and visual mockups

Some images, concept visuals, and interface mockups on Butterfly’s website are generated or materially altered using AI. We use them to illustrate ideas, scenarios, or possible designs.

Unless we expressly say otherwise, these visuals should not be understood as photographs of real people or events, examples of customer work, or a promise that the product will look or behave exactly as shown. Where a visual could reasonably be mistaken for authentic material, we identify it as AI-generated or illustrative.

Do not submit confidential, special-category, or other sensitive personal data to an AI feature unless your organisation has authorised that use. Provider-specific processing and retention terms are addressed through the applicable project setup, contract, and data processing agreement.

Our safeguards and limits

People stay responsible

AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete, or unexpected. Creators remain responsible for reviewing generated translations and subtitles, configuring AI characters, and deciding whether content is appropriate for their audience.

AI is used for support—not final decisions

Butterfly’s current AI features are designed to support content creation and simulated conversations. They are not intended to determine admission, grades, employment, credit, access to essential services, or another decision with legal or similarly significant effects.

Sensitive uses need separate review

A client must not repurpose Butterfly’s AI features for a high-risk or prohibited use. Education, defence, public-sector, employment, and other sensitive deployments require a use-case assessment and project-specific safeguards before launch.

Data protection still applies

Where AI processing involves personal data, GDPR requirements continue to apply. The organisation providing an experience may be the data controller, while Butterfly may act as its processor under a data processing agreement.

Shared responsibility

Butterfly Interactive

  • Documents the intended purpose and limits of available AI features.
  • Maintains appropriate technical, organisational, and contractual controls.
  • Reviews providers and updates this statement when material uses change.
  • Provides project-specific information needed for a client’s assessment.

Clients and creators

  • Choose whether an AI feature is suitable for the audience and context.
  • Provide required participant notices and a valid basis for personal-data use.
  • Review generated content and provide meaningful human oversight.
  • Do not use the platform for prohibited or unassessed high-risk purposes.
If a proposed use could affect a person’s education, employment, safety, access to a service, or another important right, contact Butterfly before deployment so the use case can be assessed separately.

Official sources and updates

AI rules and official guidance continue to develop. We review this page when our AI uses or the applicable guidance materially change.
